How do they work?
Pretty simply. You sign up for a Distro on the thread it's offered and at the appointed time it is sent out in accordance with a list placed on the same thread . You will need first to send Gandalf a PM of your name and address. We try and send distro's in a way that makes geographical sense across countries.
Can anyone sign up?
YES! Just pm Gandalf your name, address, and email, and State that you would like to join the Distro Group.
On receipt of the distro you copy the disks and then post them on within 3 days of receipt. Each distro will have a mailing list enclosed with it so you will know where to send it to next. The mailing list must be posted on with the original disks so don't forget to include it! You will also need to tell us on the thread that you have received and posted on. The disks end up in the hands of our two librarians in Australia and USA. The moderators watch the progress of a distro but of course so does the next person on the list!
Note: Your address will never be published or stored on the web by us but a database of your addresses will be held by the moderators privately.
What happens if the Distro goes wrong somehow?
If a Distro arrives damaged let the moderator know but contact the person before and ask them to replace it. Disks are fragile, so handle with care avoiding fingerprints and please package suitably - not just a plain envelope.
If you are unable to complete the copying task send the distro on so that others are not delayed - you can always borrow it again from the librarians. Try and PM us in an emergency if you cant avoid a holdup - but note this doesnt include your two vacation.....!
The disk just wont copy. Try copying it to the hard drive rather than burning from one disk to another. If that wont work refer back to the moderator for help.
Do I have to post material abroad?
We do send material all over the world and we try not to make the same person send on to another country regularly but sometimes it can happen. You will need to add airmail stickers and customs labels as appropriate to your country. I suggest you complete the customs label as 'gift' 'Used Data Disks' and a low value (I use 20p a disk from GB. You will also be asked possible to put your name and address on the package.
How much will it cost?
Distros are free and represent often hours of work by other collectors putting together a collection to share. 'Thanks' on a thread is always encouraging! Your only cost is buying a new mailing envelope and stamp to post on. You will need to make sure that you have a good supply of blank DVDs too!!
Can I borrow earlier Distros?
Yes Distros can be borrowed once they have finished being distributed from either Librarian. You'll find a list of past Distros by looking at the threads. Please ensure that the librarians (Robotgirl in Australia and Gandalf in USA) are compensated for post and packing. PM them to sort this area out in advance. Again distros that are borrowed should be returned within a week and please advise the librarians once received by you or posted back.
Can I offer a Distro?
Yes please. Watch the threads, as often we ask for ideas, but feel free to PM airlanes or Gandalf at any time about a Distro you have in mind or indeed anything that you think would enhance our forum. Please note if you offer a distro you will be asked to prepare two complete sets for posting!
Thanks Ian for putting this FAQ together. _________________ Gandalf..........
