In my never ending, and frustrating, efforts to find a reasonable means of sharing OTR files, I am experimenting this month with a premium Max version of Sendspace. There seem to be a lot of things I like about Sendspace and some things I am unhappy about. Check it out for yourselves: www.sendspace.com
The free account allows for unlimited disc space and the wizard uploader can upload any number of files. If you buy the premium account you can also download with the wizard (up to 4 gigs per day). Files have a short life with the free accounts: only 7 days after the last download. Files remain indefinitely in premium accounts. Both free and premium accounts allow for setting up folders and sharing entire folders as well as individual files.
One feature I especially like is the "DropBox" feature that is included with the Premium Max account. The Dropbox is a published link that anyone can use to upload files (300 megs max) to a designated folder. The link to the upload folder can also be made available. I have set up these links and encourage everyone to try uploading thru the Dropbox and downloading via the receiving box. Seems like this might be a good way for our community as a whole to quickly and easily share some files.
Dropbox: http://www.sendspace.com/dropbox/8a64t1
Pickup Folder: http://www.sendspace.com/folder/uuskq5
I have uploaded a couple of scarce files to start things off.
Uploading via the Dropbox isn't the fastest but it seems to work well. The upload wizard has a reasonable speed and the online multiple file uploader seems to work best of all but limits you to 5 uploads at a time.
Let me know what you think.

David:
Thanks for the input. I have been uploading files to my premium account and currently have 8.6 gigs uploaded. The uploading is going quite well as time permits. Currently, I have uploaded about 50 series. I will eventually publish the links so forum members, or anyone else, can downloaded whatever they want. Sendspace is far from perfect but the premium account is better than anything else I have tried since the days when MM was called Streamlod and actually worked as advertised, part of the time.

Gary,
Saw this post last night, but didn't get around to trying it 'til tonight.
I uploaded a 6MB file (1942 Ellery Queen) in about 1:40min... 65KB/sec. Not bad at all.
I downloaded your Dick Tracy (one I needed - thank you). 12MB took about 2+ minutes (at 80KB/sec).
Very smooth, no problems getting the files. I can see the lure of the premium account, unlimited storage with links for sharing. _________________ .

Chloe:
Thanks for your feedback. I think I will be investing a lot of time uploading programs to SendSpace. I just hope they don't decide to change or "improve" things in the manner of MediaMax or Mediafire.

Gary...can you upload zip files? Sure would make it easier to send a bunch of files this way, to someone. Sometimes it seems zipping the files is easier than sending
I visit lots of blogs that use Sendspace for uploading their files. Most are in the RAR form...but a few are ZIP. So...this must mean you can upload these types. I have premium accounts with Gigasize and Rapid Share. I had one with Megaupload, at one time...but it has expired. _________________ Gil |

Yes, You can do zip file but they are limited to 300 megs per file. SendSpace even recommends zip files. I am going to try some zip files a bit later to see how it works out.

Gary...well, it also said something about sending complete folders (with files inside). Just wonder if this would be as simple as doing zips? It seems, mostly, when you zip a bunch of files, they are placed in folders. So...which would be easier...sending a zip or a folder? You might want to try both. _________________ Gil |

Gil:
I have been mostly uploading complete folders via the wizard uploader. The main advantage for someone downloading from a Sendspace account is that downloading a zip file allows for downloading multiple files at once. Downloading from a folder means one file at a time. I really like uploading entire files at once and someone downloading can pick and choose the files they want. So many of us here are now looking for specific files to complete a set rather than entire runs of a series.
The premium account does allow the account owner to download entire folders at once that are stored in their own accounts. This is similar to MediaMax EXCEPT that it seems to work.

Hi Gary, used your new files without problem.
I have been downloading from sendspace via links on a favourite blog site for over a year now and have had times when It has been a real pain to use. In fact I've given up and waited until Monday morning GMT which is usually quieter as you are all asleep in the USA! This ploy works reasonably well.
I am more impressed with the system that Roadcone is currently testrunning which is far easier suggest you chat to him.
However keep at it as thats only one negative.

Gary...OK, so you're saying zips would be "all at once", but folders would still be the "contained files"...one at a time. Then, it does appear that zips would be faster, and more convenient. Then we would just have to "unzip" the files, ourselves.
If you don't have a premium account, you have to wait to download files, with RapidShare, Gigasize, and others. Seems with "Sendspace", you don't have to wait to download files. Anyone have something to say on this? Know of any others that are this way? _________________ Gil |

That seems to be pretty much it. There is no waiting to downloading with Sendspace and you don't have to sign up with Sendspace to download. I'm going to continue with Sendspace and hope they don't double cross me down the road.

Gary...can you give us some idea for the premium prices, for the two sections they offer? Also, did you choose the one on the left...which seems to be for both uploads and downloads? _________________ Gil |

Gil:
I chose the premium account on the right called Sendspace Max. It is also for both uploading and downloading. The price for this account depends on how long you commit to. Month by month is $11.99, which is what I paid to test it out. Three months works out at $10.99. Six months works out to $9.99 per month. If you pay a year in advance it works out to $7.99 per month.
http://www.sendspace.com/joinmax_pay.html
With the Max account there is no limit on the amount of disk space you can use in uploading and storing your files. Using the Sendspace Wizard I can download multiple files (up to 4 gigs a day) every day from my own account. This is a much higher amount than MediaMax allows. There appear to be no restrictions for anyone downloading from the urls I provide from my account. The only real problem is that they have to download one file at a time. That is probably where the advantage of using zip files might come in.
The other premium account, SendSpace Pro appears to be more for providing direct links to your files for customers, etc. You buy so much bandwidth in order to provide users with direct access to your files:

Hope this helps.

Gary...yes, the yearly Max account seems to be the best idea, as is the idea of uploading zip files for downloading. Even though it costs a bit more, yearly, than MM, you have to consider what you are getting in return...something that works! (I never did like that idea of MM taking away your credits, if you wanted to download something). _________________ Gil |
